Production Techniques/Methods:

Woodturning is practised using a wood lathe with hand-held tools to cut a symmetrical shape around the axis of rotation rather like a potter’s wheel. This discipline was first practiced in the UK by Iron Age inhabitants in around 100BC. Artifacts such as spokes and hubs for wooden wheels have been found in the Glastonbury area along with mallets, bowls and tool handles. It is thought that strap and bow lathes were used to turn smaller objects. Romans possessed a great understanding of the principles of lathe technology and probably highly skilled in all areas of turning from wood to metal. The Anglo Saxons were very accomplished wood turners making much of their domestic utensils from wood. The Vikings were excellent natural woodworkers, like the Saxons they had a great affinity with the material and most every-day domestic items were crafted from wood. Archaeological excavations at York (Viking Jorvik) revealed all manner of turned objects including cups and bowls.

Industrial production has replaced many of the traditionally turned products. Woodturning by hand is still practiced today for limited run crafted pieces. Items made for centuries on a lathe include tool handles, candlesticks, egg cups, knobs, lamps, rolling pins, cylindrical boxes, knitting needles, needle cases, thimbles, pens, chessmen, spinning tops; legs, spindles and pegs for furniture like this carved table with bobbin supports.
